Description: In Liberia, the Joghban Clan just demonstrated that stopping landgrabbing is possible when communities stand together, mobilise and resist. The community's resistance began in 2012 when Equitorial Palm Oil began to expand their plantation on to their land. The Clan were united in their opposition, even though they faced intimidation and harrassment by EPO security forces and the police. They lodged a complaint with the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) and presented a petition to the government. They were jubilant when President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf committed to supporting their struggle to protect their land. This is a landmark victory for communities in a country where over 50% of the land has been given to companies without the involvement of the communities that live on and customarily own the land.
